Ag Days Application for Funding Denied

Manitoba Ag Days will not receive $60,000 from the Accommodation Tax Fund.

Brandon City Council unanimously denied their application at Monday night's meeting.

Director of economic development for the city Sandy Trudel tells CKLQ the fund has specific eligibility requirements.

"When the Accommodation Tax program was brought in, it was geared around generating new heads in beds, otherwise referred to as overnight stays," said Trudel.  "Manitoba Ag Days is a really successful event in Brandon. Unfortunately, they're so successful that they actually fill all of our hotels."

She says the event has expanded, but those overnight stays will be generated outside of the Wheat City, which disqualifies them from receiving funding from the Accommodation Tax Grant.

It's believed this year's event will run a deficit of 53-thousand dollars, as they make it bigger than ever.

They will be celebrating their 40th year on January 17th to the 19th at the Keystone Centre.
